• By the time German pop star Peter Schilling released his single “Major Tom (Coming Home)” in the U.S., the original German-language version had already been a massive hit for more than nine months in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria

• It’s assumed that Peter Schilling’s Major Tom character is a reference to his eponym in the 1969 song by David Bowie, “Space Oddity”. Whether that makes it homage or copyright infringement is up to you to decide

• Thirty-four years ago this week, astronaut Sally K. Ride became the first American woman to fly in space when STS-7 lifted off from launch complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center; an early and important milestone for the NASA human spaceflight and shuttle programs

• Two and a half months earlier, Story Musgrave and Donald Peterson on STS-6 went for the first shuttle spacewalks to test the Extravehicular Mobility Unit, an independent anthropomorphic spacesuit for astronauts performing extra-vehicular activity (EVA) in Earth orbit

• World View Enterprises was scheduled to launch its Stratollite high-altitude balloon systems on a four-day test flight carrying a chicken sandwich from Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). As it turns out the delicious launch was delayed due to weather conditions

• Iridium, a mobile satellite services provider, announced that if SpaceX can shorten wait times between launches it will be willing to use pre-flown Falcon 9 first stage boosters for fleet replacement
